Last school year, from March to June, Phylicia, Steph, Jenna, Nicole and I ran the musical extra curricular at our school. What musical? DISNEY'S ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR. (no small feat). In just three months we managed to audition students, teach songs and choreography and make sets/props. "Alice" consumed our minds, conversations, lunches, evenings and a few weekends for those three months....but in the end our students managed to deliver 2 pretty incredible shows of Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr. and it made it ALL worth it!
So when we saw that Alice in Wonderland was playing at the Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara on the Lake (NOTL) we couldn't help but buy tickets!! We knew that the musical wouldn't be the exact same as our show, but we thought it would be cool to be able to sing along to at least a couple of numbers! We purchased them for the night of Thursday October 6th (because we knew that Friday was a PA day)!!
Well the fun started right when we left our school!....
In our 1 1/2 hour car ride to Burlington, Steph and I talked about the good, bad and ugly of every student at Elkhorn...ha...SUPER therapeutic! We are both prep teachers so we both teach every kid in the school and had LOTS to vent about!! :)
In Burlington we dropped off Steph's car and joined Phyli and Jenna for the second 1 1/2 hour jaunt to NOTL.
We were STARVING when we arrived (so starving that en route to NOTL we ate year-old Swedish Berries that I dug up from the bottom of my purse LOL). When we arrived we parked and walked to the nearest restaurant "Niagara's Finest Thai Food" .... which we had laughed about when we googled good restaurants in NOTL (because usually restaurants that say they're the finest just AREN'T ha) but it actually turned out to be PRETTY amazing!! :)
After dinner we went on a hunt to find butter tarts (I was REALLY in the mood for one because you can usually get SUCH good butter tarts in NOTL). We walked up and down the main street to no avail! We did however stumble upon a candy shop and got a few goodies for the show!!We laughed SO hard when we went to the theatre and what did we find?!? BUTTER TARTS!!!
Well...the night kind of went downhill from there!! HA HA. The show was "meh". Unlike OUR production that was UPBEAT and EXCITING, with a somewhat confusing but still existent story line, THIS show was mellow and dark, with no story line and a complete lack of any songs that were catchy or memorable enough to sing after leaving! AND...it was VERY LONG!!! Steph and I hardly made it through the second half of the show! HA HA. We had to keep nudging each other to stay awake!! After 2 hours of watching, we started planning out our early departure!!
When the show finally DID end and we got to leave (ha) we had a good chuckle over the average age of the other show attendees. Let's just say.... Thursday night must be seniors outing night at the local old age home ;)!
Even though the show was a DUD and getting home at 1:00am (and having to get up at 6:30am for work) was a little rough....the COMPANY made it TOTALLY worth it! :) Where to next, girls?!?!
