A couple of years ago I saw a picture of a blogger I follow (galmeetsglam.com) donning a gray zip-up sweater that I immediately ‘had to have’. The simple, stylish and practical nature of the zip-up caught my attention and screamed “perfect cottage sweater”! I googled the name on the tag- Patagonia- and that’s when my love affair with the brand began!
Patagonia’s mission statement is to:
"build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis”.
The most amazing thing about this is that Patagonia is a company that has been faithfully pursuing this mission for the last 31 years! Talk about being AHEAD of the game!! Since 1986 they have been donating 1% of all sales to support grass roots environmental groups, they’ve undertaken yearly education campaigns on significant environmental issues, and they’ve worked tirelessly to ensure their clothing has the least possible environmental impact. In 1996 they assessed the dyes they were using and eliminated colors from the line that required the use of toxic metals and sulfides. They also made the switch from regular cotton to organic cotton after learning that “25% of all toxic pesticides used in agriculture is used in the cultivation of cotton resulting in horrific pollution of soil and water”.
Patagonia’s commitment to producing quality clothing, promoting fair labor practices and safe working conditions throughout their supply chain and doing their best to take care of the environment is so inspiring! While in Alaska David and I talked about goals we had for when we returned home. One goal we both felt motivated to tackle was living a more sustainable lifestyle- using fewer disposable items (e.g. plastic bags, plastic wrap), buying fewer items of clothing and re-using items whenever possible! We believe, as Patagonia does, that “a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of our planet”!
I brought my Patagonia zip-up to Alaska and it was my most-worn item by a LANDSLIDE! It’s easy to layer, it’s light enough to hike in and then wrap around your waist once you heat up and it looks great! If you're in the market for a new sweater...support Patagonia! It's TOTALLY WORTH IT!
Other Patagonia items I'm crushing over:
