My family is generally pretty active- we like bike rides, swimming, playing backyard games at the cottage, running, tubing etc., but VERY RARELY do we do ALL of these activities in one weekend. Well, this weekend was the exception. You already know about my crazy 1.5 hour run on Friday. Little did I know that that was just the beginning of one of the most ACTIVE weekends of my LIFE!!
On the way up to the cottage on Friday we stopped at Bike Sports in Newmarket to get David a new road bike. Poor David has been riding a mountain bike (well, actually ROBERT has been riding David's mountain bike, while David rides Robert's road bike) and we thought it was finally time for David to get a road bike of his own!! We had a really nice night together and tried out a new restaurant for dinner called Chip and Malt, on Main Street Newmarket! (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
After getting up to the cottage on Friday night we went for a 40 minute power walk (it was 11pm!!) and then hit the sack. On Saturday morning we got up and played a family OGODISK tournament (check out this link if you haven't played this game before), went for a 40km bike ride to Keswick, and THEN decided to do a 1.2km swim! Afterwards we got the tubes and tubed around Lake Simcoe until our arms literally couldn't hold on any longer. SO PAINFUL, but SO MUCH FUN!
On Sunday morning, David and I got up at 5:50am (WAY TOO EARLY) to drive to Blue Mountain so that I could participate in a 5km race with Jessica. It was Jessica's birthday gift to me, and BOY was it a TREAT! lol. This race was part of a series of events called the Endurance Challenge Series, which features "the most pronounced elevation gain trail race in all of Ontario". I knew we were doomed pretty much right away when I noticed that most of the runners were wearing special TRAIL running shoes (who even knew those were a thing?!?) and my suspicions were confirmed when the race began and we headed into a series of uphill trails. I would classify the trails that the run took us on as difficult HIKING trails! The fact that they wanted us to RUN up them was INSANE and clearly I wasn't prepared enough (read: AT ALL). Sprinkled between deep, deep breaths, Jessica and I enjoyed some lovely conversation, mainly centred around WHEN THE HECK WE WOULD REACH THE TOP!! HA. When we finally did reach the top, the VIEW was stunning and we thought "WOW!! Maybe all that pain was worth it...". We were wrong!! Instead of winding down the mountain (like we wound UP the mountain), the run route took us in one straight line down Blue Mountain....from TOP to BOTTOM. It was one of the scariest things ever and our quads felt like they were literally ON FIRE!! Clearly there are some techniques for moving quickly downhill that we don't know because, aside from Jessica falling (lol), more runners passed us on THAT part of the race than on the uphill part!! We were KILLING ourselves laughing...because we felt like the people in THIS video, expect we didn't get any cheese. #lame. Finishing that run was INCREDIBLE, not because we were proud of how we did, or because we enjoyed it, but because it was OVER.
WE HAD SURVIVED!
David and I spent a few hours at Wasaga Beach, relaxing, and then headed home to do more RELAXING!
My body was officially exhausted and all I could say at the end of the day on Sunday was OUCH!!
Hi! I'm Mrs. Julia Dawe,
