This past weekend my mom, my sister (Madeline) and I participated in our FIRST (and maybe last LOL) TRIATHLON!
Here's the back story....
A few years ago for Christmas, I signed my family up to the do the 30km running race called "Around The Bay", in Hamilton. Since then, my family has started gifting each other challenges, and this triathlon was one of those "gifts"! Madeline signed my mom up for Mother's Day, and my mom signed me up for my birthday! Lucky us, eh?!
To prepare for the triathlon we ran, swam and biked.....but never on the same day (or at least not one right after the other). HA. That was probably our biggest mistake. That, and the fact that we didn't research what to WEAR when participating in a triathlon. (see below)
Now, you might not think that there's much of a difference, but TRUST us, there IS!
Most athletes exit the water RUNNING and hop RIGHT onto their bikes without changing (because their triathlon suits are supportive and padded). WE had to hold up towel tents for each other to change out of our bathing suits and into our sports bras and running/biking outfits! It was HILARIOUS...and SUPER time consuming!
When we eventually made it onto our bikes we were looking forward to the second part of the bike course which Madeline had told us was going to be flat! WELL....the flat part NEVER CAME! That 33km ride was the hardest and hilliest of my entire life! It did have some comical moments though. For example, at about 20km's into the ride, on a straight part of the course, we spotted a man leaning against a large motorcycle on the side of the road. I was scared because we were riding on deserted country roads, and we'd only seen race volunteers every 10-15km's. Madeline and my mom started to drift to the left in order to avoid hitting the man. Well, as we got closer he sort of walked towards us and YELLED at my mom and Madeline "YOU TWO ARE DISSSSQUALIFIIIEED!!!" Apparently my mom and Madeline had crossed the (unmarked) center line of the road. This was a COMPLETE joke because 1) that part of the course was totally straight and crossing the line would not have chopped off any distance and 2) There was no marked center line!! and 3) We were CLEARLY not COMPETING to WIN this triathlon (after the dressing fiasco and stopping for photos we were WELL BEHIND most other competitors LOL). It did provide some comedic relief though and in the end we all received medals :).
When we dismounted our bikes, we were POOPED! But we wasted no time and started the 7km run (read: WADDLE) portion of the race! ha ha ha. My legs have never felt more like jelly! Running felt SO unnatural for the first 2-3kms, but after that we started getting into the groove! When we saw the 1km to go mark, we were THRILLED and actually SHOCKED that we had been able to complete the triathlon!
While there are MANY things we'd do differently next time, I wouldn't have changed anything about our first triathlon experience! I'm so proud of us! And I'm SO thankful that I have these incredible women in my life who push me to do crazy things, and who make even the most painful experiences FUN!
WELL DONE GIRLS!! xo
