These shirts PRETTY MUCH sum up the first few days our our trip.
Here's the story:
On Friday at 3:45am I woke up to David excitedly shaking me saying "let's go! You should get in the shower now!!" Still a little sleepy I said "did I sleep through my alarm?!" (I knew I had set it for 4:15am and was confused as to why I was waking up to David and not the alarm) and David said "no! I just can't sleep anymore, so let's get going!" ha ha. I love him! SO we had an EXTRA early start to the day!
We started our drive at around 4:30am, and after a few bathroom stops and food stops, and 19 hours of driving....we arrived in MYRTLE BEACH at 11pm!! We were EXHAUSTED but so excited for our vacation to officially be starting! Our plan was to stay one night in a hotel, and then move to a condo we had rented through Airbnb (like wayyyy back in March) that we would stay at for 8 nights at the crazy low price of $67 CANADIAN a night! We had hit the jackpot! .... or so we thought!
The next morning we went for an AMAZING breakfast and were just in the middle of purchasing beach supplies (rackets, sunscreen, goggles etc.) when David texted the Airbnb host, Steve, to say that we had arrived and planned to get to his place at 3pm-ish. He texted back "I was just informed that the unit was double booked. There are people in it until the 7th of August. You can get a refund by contacting Airbnb". Like WHAAAAAaaaaat?!?! HA HA. David and I actually froze in shock- we didn't know whether to be more ANGRY at Steve or more PANICKED because we had nowhere to stay for a week! We booked it back to the hotel room (that we only had access to for a few more hours before checkout) so that we could use the wifi to find another place to stay. Airbnb places were all booked, so we started calling hotels. Hilton, Sheraton, Embassy Suites, Days Inn....ALL SOLD OUT. It was Saturday night and Myrtle Beach is packed with people- it seemed like there were literally no rooms available! Finally we called Best Western and they said that they had no space left at their hotel, but they knew of one motel that had at least one room available. It was called Castaway Inn. We quickly called Castaway Inn and were THRILLED to find that they had ONE ROOM LEFT for the 8 nights we needed! HALLELUJAH! We were saved!! And just in time, because the hotel cleaners were frustrated that we were still in the room 2 HOURS after the check-out time and threatening to charge us for another night!
We headed straight to Castaway Inn, feeling pooped BUT SO RELIEVED that we had found a place! We wouldn't have to sleep in the car after all!!! From the outside Castaway Inn looked like a typical motel- kinda sketchy, but do-able. We were happy that it had a pool (although we were a little concerned about the excessive smoking and apparent uncleanliness of the facility) and it was on the beach. And we thought that was good enough given the circumstances. We were told that the room would be ready at 4, so we had to wait a couple of hours at the beach before we could access our room. At 4 David went to get the key (I opted to stay at the beach and relax, recovering from the emotional drama of the day!). When he returned.....I could tell that something was NOT okay. David said "follow me and come see the room". So I did.
It's hard to describe how disgusting that room was. The front door was an inch and a half too short, leaving a large gap (large enough for cock-roaches, mice, lizards etc.) open to the outside. The bedding was ripped and stained. In the bathroom we found cigarette butts (on the shower sill) and used facecloths covered in hair from ALL parts of someone else's body. It was HORRIBLE. We both stood facing each other in the room and had a good little cry for a few minutes before coming up with our next game plan. We knew we had to spend at least one night at Castaway Inn because there were NO OTHER ROOMS AVAILABLE IN MYRTLE BEACH (we just didn't bring ANYTHING inside of the room), but we HOPED we could find something better for the rest of our stay. There was no way we could do 8 nights in that hell hole.
Here are a few pics... (these make the room look BETTER than it was. We should have taken more pictures....but it will give you a small taste of what we experienced) The first two are pictures of the front door (top and bottom), the third picture is of the window sill in the bathroom with the cigarette butt.
We called around and managed to find space at the Holiday Inn for way over our initial budget, but at that point we literally would have payed an arm and a leg (actually, we didn't even know if we'd wake up the next day with all of our arms and legs LOL), so we took it HAPPILY.
That night we went to Broadway on the Beach (a really cool entertainment area with lots of shops and restaurants), had a nice dinner and tried to forget about the night ahead of us.
Since I'm writing this blog, you know that we did survive the night- we didn't sleep at all, but we survived! And the next day we got up very early to leave Castaway Inn....NEVER TO RETURN, EVER!
We drove to the Holiday Inn and were SO HAPPY to find clean beds, a clean bathroom, clean facilities, 4 gorgeous pools, a gym and a boardwalk when we checked in. YAYAYAYAYA!! It took us both some time to settle in and feel calm (it felt too good to be true...ha...we kept waiting for the catch!!) but we eventually did and we've been LOVING spending our days at the pool/beach, reading, swimming, running, tanning and of course, watching the Bachelorette finale ;)! Life is good again!
Here are a few pics of our time so far....
We're looking forward to the next few days in "PARADISE" (**knock on wood**)
