It’s hard to believe that it’s been 365 days since David and I tied the knot! In some ways it feels like it’s been much longer- we’ve learned so much, experienced so many “firsts” and really settled into our own rhythms and routines that it’s hard to remember life pre-marriage. And yet, in other ways, it feels like just yesterday I was getting ready to walk down the aisle! Regardless, it’s been a fantastic year, and this weekend we celebrated with a weekend away in Niagara!
We left on Friday morning and en route I asked David “did you book a room with a view of the Falls?” He said “No way. I would never pay extra for a view. We’re hardly going to be in the room anyways,” which is fair. When we arrived and went to check out our room we opened the curtains and were both so shocked and excited to find that our corner room had an incredible view of the Falls from 2 sides!! (The trip was off to a great start!!)
To start off our weekend away, I convinced David to bike ride from Niagara Falls to Niagara on the Lake with me (a 25km ride, one way). Poor David- it was one of the hottest and most humid days of the summer so far (felt like 40 degrees!!!) and the trail was very hilly and not shaded AT ALL! ha ha ha. David wanted to stop after the first 10km, but with lots of encouragement (and a few water breaks) we DID make it to Niagara on the Lake!! (I love that husband of mine)
We had lunch at a place called The Old Angel Inn, and then hopped BACK on our bikes for the ride home! We were SO SWEATY that it looked like we had just done a hot yoga class (like sweat flowing from places we didn’t even know we could sweat from…it was gross!!), and it felt like we had too! We were pooped!
After a quick stretch and shower, we left to go do the Hornblower Cruise- Voyage to the Falls (previously called Maid of the Mist). Neither of us had done the ride since we were kids, so it was LOTS of fun! We finished the night with dinner and a walk around Niagara Falls!
The next day we had a delicious breakfast and then became tourists for the morning- we did the Furry of Niagara tour (which gave some history on the development of the Falls) and the Behind the Falls tour, where we got to go through the caves behind the Falls! Both were REALLY cool!
Afterwards, we checked out of our hotel and drove to spend the afternoon in Niagara-on-the-lake! I LOVE that little town! The shops are SO cute, the restaurants are awesome, and there are like 8 ice cream shops on the one main street! HA. It’s totally my kind of place! We did some shopping, eating, chatting…and even spent time hanging out on a park bench! It was perfect!
I booked a 1 year anniversary photo session for Saturday evening in Toronto and, because we had to check out of our hotel at 11am, I opted to get my hair done at a local salon so that I didn’t have gross hair for the photos! It was such a great, relaxing treat and for only $35, I’m considering making it a weekly thing ;) ha ha.
We ended the day with a really fun photo shoot at Toronto Botanical Gardens (STUNNING!!!!).
On Sunday, David’s parents hosted a 1 year anniversary party for David and I, and invited my family and grandma, as well as David’s grandparents! It was lots of fun to spend time together and we even got to eat the top layer of our wedding cake that Patty saved for a whole year! It was surprisingly delicious a whole year later! I wish we had been able to save some for next year!
David, after 1 year of marriage I’m even more SOLD than I was when I said “I DO” 365 days ago. You are patient, kind, hard working and lots of fun! You’re so good at loving me in all the ways I need to be loved, and I feel SO LUCKY that I get to be your partner in this crazy life adventure! I’m looking forward to many more memories and laughs with you this year! I love you! xoxo
